Life isn't that Bad

Caleb started kindergarten this year, and our school does a wonderful thing. The first day of school, they let the parent come along with the child so everyone can get really adjusted. After Caleb and I took our tour, the children went with their teacher and the parents were left in the gym to fill out some paper work. We were assigned to fill our a questionnaire about our child’s likes and dislikes, and then to write a letter to our child that his teacher will read to him later that month.

As I sat to write my information, a man asked if he could sit next to me in an open seat. I of course said, “No problem.” After a few minutes I could tell he was flustered. He then turned to me and asked when the paper work had to be turned in. I answered with, either today or just send it with your child to school the next day. He then went on to explain how he was in the army, and just got leave for a couple of days, before he ships out in three days, so he could see his daughter off to her first day of school. He was worried because he didn’t know all the answers to his daughter’s favorite things, and wanted to take the paper home to have is wife fill it out. He than turned to me and said, I don’t think I can write the letter to her. I place my hand on his forearm and said, “It is even more important for you to write it.” Later I peaked over and noticed he has started his letter with, "My Dearest Sweetheart." I had to blink back tears.

As I walked away from him, I realized, my life isn’t that hard. My husband is not going over seas, where I have to worry if he is even going to make it back or not. Matt still makes it home for most dinners, and is available to me to call when I need him. Life is really not that bad when you look at how much other people have to go through.

Oh my goodness, I started to tear up with that story. The sacrifice that these men and women and their families make for us is so amazing. No we don't have it bad at all.

Yes, that brought tears to my eyes too. Some people sacrifice so much and we get to enjoy the blessings from it. Those families are heroic.

Hi Kristin- I am a friend of Lisa Hills. She sent me your blog, I hope you don't mind in I comment. My husband is also an ortho resident. He goes in at 4:30am and comes home usually around 8:30pm. It is hard, so hard. When people ask me how I deal with it I always tell them, "it could be worse, he could be in Iraq". Your story makes me realize what I am telling people is the truth! It could always be worse!
